Leviticus 13 deals with the regulation of skin diseases including leprosy. Public health sytem was set up in the camp where there were some two million people. The last thing the camp needed in the middle of the wilderness was a spread of diseases. According to the NIV Study Bible, there was an initial examination of the symptoms of the skin disease (v. 1-8) then examination of raw flesh (v. 9-17), boils (v. 18-23), burns (v. 24-26), sores on the head or chin (v. 29-37) and white spots (v. 38-39), and skin diseases on the head that cause baldness (v. 40-44). There was also concern about mildew that ocurred in rainy season (47-59). In all cases, it was the priest who was the public health official, who examine the person, and is the one who can give a clean bill of health. (Leviticus 14) Note that all skin diseases mentioned here may not be leprosy.

What about us? We should not only be concern about our spiritual well-being but should strive to be healthy. What spiritual application do you find out of these passages? Is there a command or warning? A person whose example we can follow, or someone we should avoid being.

Leviticus 11 is a passage of clean and unclean food. This is also mentioned in Deuteronomy 14:3-20 Instead of been bogged down with the details of which food is allowed. The purpose behind this list was for health reasons. The animals which was acceptable for human consumption were those that chewed cud and had a split hoof (v. 3). I personally would not eat some of the list of unclean animals, mentioned in the pasage. However, we should look at Acts 15, where the Jerusalem Council only had the following requirements for Gentile believers: Act 15.19-21 to abstain from food given to idols, sexual immorality and from blood. Paul mentioned in Romans 14 that we should not let our brother stumble because what we eat and the day we worship, we should be considerate of our weaker brother.

Hebrews 10
The author reminds us that the law is only a shadow of things to come. Hence it is not a perfect system, rather Jesus came, he offered the perect sacrifice, once for all, on our behalf. In verse 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. . (NIV) The author repeats that Jesus sits at the right hand of God. The removal of sin is far superior with the Christ the High Priest, in verse 14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. (NIV)

Aaron and his sons were chosen as priests in Leviticus 8. Considering the incident that occurred in Exodus 32 (February 11), where Aaron buckled under pressure and made the golden calf, built an altar for the golden calf, and encouraged the people to worship it. This is the same Aaron who is now the first High Priest of the Old Testament under Mosaic traditions. Notice in chapter 8, Moses brought Aaron and his sons and washed them with water, clothed them with the priestly robes (which was mentioned in Exodus 39), offered a sin offering for them, then a burnt offering for consecration, a grain offering, then finally a wave offering. It is GRACE and God's mercy that Aaron and his sons were chosen despite this awful sin of idolatry. How much so, we who are sinners, come to the Lord (1John 1.9) are forgiven of our sins and we can serve the Lord. Peter, in 1Per 1.9-10 stated we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood and a holy nation.

High Priest Page

In Leviticus 9, Aaron was inaugurated as Israel's first high priest. He began the ceremony by offering the sin offering and burnt offering for himself and the people. Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh of the ox and the ram before the Lord as a wave offering. For the meaning behind these offerings click here. Today these offerings are obsolete but are fulfilled instead by Jesus' death on the cross. We too, can approach God as boldly as Aaron did, because of faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to His Word, our sins can be forgiven, we can consecrate ourselves and have fellowship with God and with fellow believers.

In Leviticus 10, Nadab and Abihu, offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which was not prescribed. Fire came from the Presence of the Lord and struck them dead! Why is that? They wore the right clothes, had the right relations, had the right family, belonged to the right fellowship, had the right intentions in following instructions but they were still wrong and dead! The reason why they died was a clear warning even for us today, Lev 10.3 Guzik We tend to treat God with contempt, we forget he is a holy God and a righteous God. Familiarity breeds contempt as the old saying goes. We think that God is a God of love and tend to forget who he really is . In verses 6-7 the high priest can only come into the Holy of Holies once a year never with without blood, which he offered for himself on Yom Kuppir

The blood of Christ. verses 11-28. Christ entered a more greater tabernacle that is not man-made. he entered the Holy of Holies by His own blood, which is superior to goats and bulls. A verse that stood out was '..and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.'

In Leviticus 6, mention is made of restitution when something is stolen, the full amount of the item stolen must be returned in addition to a restitution tax. Discussion are also made of the regulations for the Burnt, Grain and Sin Offerings for Aaron and his sons. See February 16th and 17th Readings for further discussion.

In Leviticus 7, there are the regulations for the Guilt, Fellowship Offerings for Aaron and his sons.

How are these Five Offerings related to each other? In the Old Testament times,when a person sins and needs forgiveness, a sin or guilt offering is presented. After forgiveness is received the person wants to consecrate himself to God and worship, then a burnt offering or grain offering is presented. Since fellowship with God is restored, then the forgiven sinner can have fellowship with God and his neighbor, a fellowship offering is presented.

Today, all purposes of these Five Offerings are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.(John 2:29,36). The term Lamb of God refers to the sacrifices and not to any of
the Five Main Offerings.

The High Priest, Jesus, we have today is far superior to the High Priests of Aaron lineage. He sits at the right hand of God! He is the mediator (v. 6) for us. He knows what we have been through remember he spent 33 years on erth. He experienced every human emotions that we faced. Because of Jesus, we have a better covenant with God, the New Covenant, which is based on grace not on works (Ephesians 2.8-10). The acrostic grace means 'God's Riches at Christ Expense.' The New Covenant was prophesied by Jeremiah in Jeremiah 31.31-34: 31"Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah-- 32not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,[a] says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, "Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."

Leviticus 4
David Guzik from his commentary states 'The idea behind "If a person sins unintentionally" is not so much of an "accidental" sin, but of a sin committed by a person who basically loves God. The contrast to an "unintentional" sin is to sin presumptuously (Numbers 15:30) - literally, to sin "with a high hand." There is no atonement available for the one whose heart is so defiantly turned against the Lord.'

Sin Offering is discussed in great detail. The sin offering was a young bull without defect was for unintentional sins for the high priest (v. 2-12) and the community of Israel (v. 13-21). A male goat without defect was offered if a leader sins unintentionally (v. 22-27). A female goat or lamb without defect was offered for the common person (v.27-31).

Leviticus 5
Specific situations are mentioned for sin offering (v. 1-6) If a person was poor, two doves or pigeons were offered as a sin offering (7-10) or if a person was very poor, a tenth of an ephah (two quarts) of fine flour was offered.

The Last of the Five Offerings, the Guilt Offering is mentioned in Lev 5.14-6.7. The purpose of this offering is for sinning unintentionally in regards to the holy things of God. This is also known as the trespass offerings. The guilt offering requires restitution for example stealing and cheating would have a 20% fine.

Hebrews 7
In verse 1-10: The author spoke about Melchizedek, the priest of the God Most High, the king of Salem. He had no genealogy, beginning or end. Abraham gave him a tithe of a tenth of the plunder (Genesis 14.18-20). The author argued that Melchozedek was grater than Aaron and his descendants because he did not trace his descendants from the tribe of Levi, he was way before them in the times of Abraham. The one who would die, in this case, Abraham was the lesser person is blessed by the greater person, Melchizedek, the one who had no beginning or end.
Similarly, Jesus is like Melchizedek, His priest hood is superior to Aaron, and was of the order of Melchizedek,. Jesus is eternal, has no beginning or end and is holy. He does not need to sacrifice for Himself, because He is holy, but made the sacrifice once for all when He offered himself (v. 25).. Verse 24- 25 should be of comfort to us, Heb 7:24 but He, on the other hand, because He abides forever, holds His priesthood permanently.
25 Hence, also, He is able to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them (NASB).

Leviticus is a difficult book to understand. Many of us try to go through the Bible in One Year. We enjoy reading Genesis and Exodus, but by the time, we get to Leviticus, we hit the proverbial "wall" just as the marathoners experience at the 14th mile. Leviticus seems to be a boring book fill of rules and regulation but if we approach the book in a prayerful manner and with useful information that is sprovided here, we will understand the book further. The main theme of Leviticus is the holiness of God and the holiness expected for God' people. Key verse is Lev 11:45 "I am the LORD who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy." (NIV)

Leviticus 1-7 deals with the Five Main Offerings, their protocols and their purposes.
The Five Offerings

Leviticus 1: The Burnt Offering was usually a bull, ram or male bird(if the poor could not afford the above-mentioned animals, they could offer a dove or a pigeon. God even has compassion for the poor by allowing them to sacrifice what they could afford). The offering must have no defect (This is a type of Christ, Jesus, that Jesus was without sin and is the Lamb of God)and is wholly consumed by fire. The person making this sacrifice had to place his hand on the head of the animal and it would be offered on his behalf to make an atonement for him. This was a voluntary act of worship done as an expression of devoting commitment and surrender to God. Paul was thinking about this in Romans 12:1 " I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, [which is] your spiritual service of worship." Someone once said "The problem with a living sacrifice is that it keeps on crawling away from the altar.

Leviticus 2 is a grain offering, this could be either fine flour, olive oil, incense; or baked bread with salt, and no yeast and honey. The purpose of this offering was a voluntary act of worship, and recognition of God's faithfulness and provisions; devotions to God.

Leviticus 3 is a fellowship offering, this could be any animals without defect from the herd, male of female, a variety of breads can also be offered. The purpose of this offering is a voluntary act of worship, thanksgiving and fellowship. A communal meal may be included.

Today, all purposes of these Five Offerings are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.(John 2:29,36). The term Lamb of God refers to the sacrifices and not to any of

Warning against falling away (Hebrews 5.11-6.11; Hebrews 6.4-6; Hebrews 10.26-31)
After discussing spritual milk (elementary teachings) versus solid food (solid doctrine, maturity). The author exhorted the people to go on to maturity. He compare land that produces crops with a land with thorns that produces only thorn. This should remind us of the soils in the parable of the sower (Luke 8) This parable is similar to that given in (John 15.5-6; 2Peter 2.20-22; 1 John 5.16). This is pretty serious stuff.

In verse 13-20
The author assures of that God keeps His promise. He had kept His promise to Abraham, that he would have many descendants and that through him all nations would be blessed. In verse 18 two unchangeable things were mentioned, God's promise which is absolutely trustworthy and God's oath confirming the promise. When Christ died the veil separating the Holy of Holies tore into two, Jesus can enter their on our behalf. God's promise had certainty and confirmed in Jesus Christ, a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Proverbs 3 Solomon told his son not to forget his teachings, to keep his commands in his heart because he would be rewarded with long life and prosperity. The verse I had memorize as a youngster still apply today found in Proverbs 3.5-6: 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path.' Another verse that spoke to me was in verse 11-12 about not despising God's discipline. We should look for verses beginning with 'Blessed..'; 'do not...'

Proverbs 4
Solomon repeated himself, listen to a father's instruction. In this chapter he speaks about wisdom is supreme. In verse 6, do not forsake wisdom, in verse 7 wisdom is supreme, get wisdom. Esteem wisdom (v. 8). Solomon spent time talking about the path of wisdom, that it is straight, (v.11-12) and compare this with the path of the wicked. (v. 14-17) and the path of the righteous versus the wicked (v. 18-19). Verse 23 is a verse we need to memorize and keep in our hearts: 'Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the well spring of life.' We are to guard our hearts with diligence against the world, the flesh and the devil. We cannot sleep but we are on guard duty as far as the heart is concerned.

Proverbs 5
Solomon warned his son against the wiles and temptation of the adulteress. A moment of pleasure can produce a lifetime of pain (v.1-14). About 50% of marriages, including Christians end up in divorce. Why? Adultery is one of the major reasons.
Solomon told his son to be happy with his wife and stay faithful to her (v.15-22).

1 Corinthians 15.1-28
Next to Christmas, and Good Friday, Easter Sunday is the day of remembrance and especially celebration among Christians. At Easter Sunday, in church, we greet each other with the phrase, "He is risen, indeed!" Why do we celebrate Easter Sunday? Because the tomb was empty, the Roman authorities and the Jewish leaders were anxious to kill the rumors that Jesus rose from the dead. According to Paul in verse 1-12, there were witnesses who saw the risen Lord. There was Peter, and the disciples, at one time five hundred saw him, so did James and even the apostle Paul. These were credible witnesses NOT people who made up this story. No one would die for a lie.
There were skeptics in the Corinthian church who said that there is no resurrection of the dead. IF there was no resurrection of the dead, then Paul's teaching would be useless, all the teachings that the Church had taught over the past 2000 years would be a hoax, our faith would be futile and we would be people without hope and we should be pitied. Paul refuted the skeptics by saying that Christ rose from the dead FIRST as the first fruit. He elaborated on the Feast of the First Fruit, where the first sheaf of grain was presented unto the Lord in thanksgiving (Leviticus 23.10-11, 17, 20). He then compared Adam with Christ. Death came through Adam, the resurrection came through Christ. In verse 25 For He must reign until he has put his enemies under his feet. When Christ rose from the dead, He was victorious over death but when He comes back, He is coming back as Judge and King. When He has accomplish putting His enemies under His feet, He Himself will be made subject to God the Father. We should rejoice with Him that one day we too, will have victory over death in our resurrected bodies.

Proverbs 1
Proverbs 2
The key word in Proverbs is wisdom. The word occurs some 47 times. Christ is portrayed in this book as wisdom, In Proverbs 8, wisdom is personified.

Proverbs 1 What is wisdom? The word occurs some 41 times in the NIV. In Hebrew it means 'skillful living'. How do we achieve this skilleful living, simply in verse 7 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.' If you are not wise then you are foolish. Verse 7 is the THEME of the book. This is an either or situation. From the NIV Study Bible: 1:7 The theme of the book (see 9:10; 31:30; cf. Job 28:28; Ps 111:10). fear of the LORD. A loving reverence for God that includes submission to his lordship and to the commands of his word (Ecc 12:13). God is our king (Mal 1:14), but even as we stand in awe of him we can rejoice (see Ps 2:11; Isa 12:6). fools. Those who hate knowledge (v. 22) and correction of any kind (12:1), who are "quick to quarrel" (20:3) and "give full vent" to their anger (29:11), who are complacent (1:32) and who trust in themselves (28:26) rather than in God (Ps 14:1). despise wisdom and discipline.

Solomon exhorts the listener, using the phrase my son, to stay away from enticements (v. 8-19) and warned against rejecting wisdom (20-33)

In Proverbs 2 Solomon spoke about the moral benefits of wisdom. Who does wisdom come from? It comes from God as shown in verse 6-8. Wisdom is personified here, notice the words associated with Wisdom: SAVE (verse 12-15) from the ways of wicked men; SAVES from the adulteress (verse 16-22).

1Corinthians 14 with Commentaries, verse by verse
1 Corinthians 21-40
Paul continues that tongues are a sign for the unbelievers, and prophecy is a sign to the believers. (v. 22-27) He compared prophecy to tongues and said that prophecy is a superior gift since it reveals the things of God to a non believer visiting the church. He also exhort them to have an orderly worship where the purpose of the service is to strengthened the congregation. Whether it is done in tongues, there must be an interpreter present, or if people are prophecying, their words must be weighed carefully. What about today's church, there is a split down the middle between those who speak in tongues and prophecy and those who do not. How do we resolve this issue. I do not know! We should reognize that we are from one body, one faith, one baptism, and one Lord.

1Corinthians 13 with Commentaries, verse by verse
This is the Love Chapter. Paul is showing the Corinthian Church how to exercise spiritual gifts through love. He spoke about four gifts-tongues, prophecy, faith and generosity. If they do not have love agape, which is God's unconditional love, these gifts mean nothing. Verse 4-6 speaks about the quality of this love. This chapter has been misused as the Love Chapter because the meaning of the word love is misunderstood. In English the word love can be vague. While in the Greek, there are three types of love. The first is eros, which is the love between a man and a woman. The second is phileo which means brotherly love. This is where we got the word Philadelphia which means the city of brotherly love. Finally, agape is God's love which is unconditional. With this love, you can love your enemies. When Jesus said to love your enemies. This was the word that he used.

In verses 8-13, agape love is compared against tongues, prophecy and knowledge. Agape love is not a spiritual gift but it is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5.22).
Paul also mention that in our natural bodies we only know things partially but one day on our resurrected bodies we will see things the way they are.

verse 19-22 we must not participate in the altars of idols. We need to be careful today with New Age, and sorcery and witchcraft happening today.

In verse 23-33, Paul speaks about the believer's freedom. We are free, but the paradox is that we have responsibilty with that freedom that we don't let people stumble.

Job talks about the effort that men would make go to mining for gold, silver and precious stones. They make the same effort to answer the questions of life. They can find gold bit they cannot find wisdom. Job is trying to understand what is happening in his life. He admits that he does nit have wisdom. He admits that God is the one who has the wisdom (v. 23-28).

Paul warn the Corinthian Church, to learn from history (v. 1-13). Look at what happen to the Israelites in the wilderness with Moses. In verse 5 the Israelites responded to the report of the twelve spies with unbelief. (Num 14.22024, 28035; Jos 1.1-2). Paul said in verse Now these things occurred as examples[a] to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Paul also said in verse 11-13:These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
In verse 14-18, Paul told them to flee idolatry. Paul warned them to take the Lord Supper seriously, to remember what He has done for us.

Job 22 from Adam Clarke Commentary
Eliphaz reproves Job for his attempts to clear his character and establish his innocence, 1-4. Charges him with innumerable transgressions; with oppressions towards his brethren, cruelty to the poor, hard-heartedness to the needy, and uncharitableness towards the widow and the orphan; and says it is on these accounts that snares and desolations are come upon him, 5-11. Speaks of the majesty and justice of God: how he cut off the ante-diluvians, the inhabitants of Sodom and the cities of the plain, 12-20. Exhorts him to repent and acknowledge his sins, and promises him great riches and prosperity, 21-30.

Job 23 from Adam Clarke Commentary
Job answers; apologizes for his complaining; wishes to plead his cause in the presence of his Maker, from whom he knows he should receive justice; but regrets that he cannot find him, 1-9. He, however, gives himself and his cause up to God, with the conviction of his own innocence, and God's justice and goodness, 10-14. He is, nevertheless, afraid when he considers the majesty of his Maker, 15-17.

Job 24 from Adam Clarke Commentary
Job asserts that there are various transgressors whose wickedness is not visited on them in this life; and particularizes the adjust and oppressive, 1-6; those who are cruel to the poor, 7-13; the murderer, 14; the adulterer, 15; thieves and plunderers, 16,17. Nevertheless they have an accursed portion, and shall die, and their memory perish, 18-20. He speaks of the abuse of power, and of the punishment of oppressors, 21-24; and asserts that what he has said on these subjects cannot be contradicted, 25.

The issue is food offered to idols. Some Christians were not bothered by buying meat offered to idols. Because they see the idols as nothing and there is only one God. However other Christians were bothered by this, when they saw them eating the food which was offered to idols. What should be done? Paul said to be considerate of the brother with the weak conscience. we should not let the weaker brother stimble. Paul said if he would cause someone to stumble, he would never eat meat again (v. 13). What about us? The controversy arises today about some Christians drinking or smoking. What should we do? 1Corinthians 6 with Commentaries, verse by verse

1Corinthians 6
Paul spoke about two issues. The first is lawsuits among belivers (v. 1-11) and the second is sexual immorality in the church (v. 12-20). Why should believers sue against each other and take their 'dirty laundry' in front of godless judges. He reminded them that the saints will judge the ungodly and the angels. In the second issue of sexual immorality in the church we have to realize that Corinth was well-known for its sexual immorality!Link to Cleveland Commentary on Sexual Immorality in 1Cor 6 According to the NIV Study Bible Corinth had twelve temple, among the most infamous was the temple of Aphrodite, the goddess of love where the worshppers practiced temple prostitution. Corinth was well known for its immorality that the immorality of Corinth become such that the Greek verb to "Corinthianize" came to mean 'to practice sexual immorality." In a setting like this, no wonder the church was plagued with sexual sins!
In verse 18 Paul exhorts us to flee sexual immorality just as Joseph fled Potiphar's wife!! The person who commits sexual immorarilty sins against HIS OWN BODY. Paul reminded us that the body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, our bodies are not our own, it belongs to Christ and we are brought with a price. Today, we are plagued with sexual sins and temptations in the society. HIV-Aids, and all types of 'social diseases are rampant. There are more new sites created everyday which have pornographic content than non-pornographic content. We need to stay away from these sites, confess our sins to one another seek help and counseling!

Job 11-13; 1 Corinthians 5

In Job 11, we have the last of Job’s comforters visiting him. Zophar thought, like Eliphaz and Bildad, that all the troubles that Job faced was because of his sins. Zophar started to attack Job v. 2-3. He told Job that his punishment is less than he deserves (v. 6). He told Job if he put away his sins, his suffering would go away and he would be secure, and everything would be back to normal.

Job’s Fourth Speech in Job 12-14. We are just covering Job 12 and 13 today. He speaks to his three friends (12.2-13.19) and to God (13.20-14.22). Job insists that he is innocent!
In Job 12.2, he reacts with sarcasm at his comforters (verse 20). He spoke about the attributes of God 12.13-25. This section hinges around verse 13 “To God belongs wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.” According to Larry Richards, in the Complete Bible Handbook, “Now Job expressly states what he has before implied. Job knows as much about God as his friends. Job knows God’s attributes. But Job also knows that he is right! So his friends are being unfair, to side with God!

In Job 13 v. 1-12 Job expressed his frustration that his comforters are worthless (verse 12). According to the NIV Study Bible, Job calls the quacks (verse 4 and Job 16.2) and accuses them of partiality to God (since God is stronger than Job) since they told lies about Job (verse 708) One day God would examine them for their sins and punish them Verse 15 is a comforting verse for us today, “Though he slays me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face.” Job is ready to state his case to God, he felt himself innocent since no sinner would come before God. He felt he would be vindicated before God.
In 13.20-28, he speaks to God. He want God to do two things for him (1) to withdraw his hands of punishment (verse 21) and (2) summon him to speak to him, that is start taking to Job again (verse 22). He asked God to point out his sins to him because these sins in Job’s mind caused him to suffer. He asked God why he hide His face from him, torment him write down bitter things against him, fasten his feet in shackles.

1Corinthians 5 with Commentaries, verse by verse

1Corinthians 5
Church discipline is a term that was not practiced in the Corinthian church and is not practiced today. A man was sleeping with his father’s wife which implied his stepmother. The Old Testament prohibited this type of marriage (Lev 18.8; Deut 22.30; 27.20)The Corinthian Church had not excommunicated the offender.. Paul told them that he was with them in spirit and in the power of Jesus Christ. He urged them to hand the man over to Satan. (v. 5) This means, according to the NIV Study Bible, ‘Abandon this sinful man to the devil that he may afflict the man as he pleases’ This meant excommunicating him from the church. To expel him meant to put him into Satan’s territory and away from the influence of God. The rest of verse 5 said so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord The interpretation means once he is ostracized, he would repent and come back and forsake his wicked way, or another interpretation .would be Satan is allowed to bring physical affliction on the man, and this would lead him to repentance. He told them to avoid people who are sexually immoral. He did not mean people who are not Christians but people who are Christians!! He then finished with expel the wicked man from the church.

Job 8
Bildad the Shuhite started the conversation with Job by calling him a windbag. Bildad argues if Job was innocent, God is not unjust so Job and his family are suffering because of sin. God would restore to him everything that he lost. (v.6). Bildad is a traditionalist he cited the wisdom of previous generations (v. 8-19). v 20-22 Bidad emphasize restoration v. 20-22. He tells Job that he should plead for mercy, God would restore him. Again the emphasis here is that Bildad did not know the FULL picture of what was happening to Job. Let us be careful not to jump to the wrong conclusion about suffering. There are two sides to the coin. Man’s side and God’s side. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4.5 that we should not judge anything before the appointed time we should wait until the Lord comes.

Job 9 It was not only God’s wisdom, but also His power. (9.2-13). How can mere man compete with God in power? We have all this high technology, Doppler radar, supercomputer and we cannot predict the weather accurately much less control the weather! In v. 14-35 , Job envision himself being summoned into a court room. God was summoned in to answer Job charges against Him but God would not answer. Even if Job was right how would he answer God. He would be crushed and overwhelmed.. Job was not a match for God.! In said in v. 33, if there was someone to arbitrate between him and God, someone to remove God’s rod for him. This verse does not imply the mediatorship of Christ rather someone who would speak on his behalf.

Job 10 God agrees with his comforters that he must be wicked before God. (v. 1-7) He saw himself as the work of God’s hand in the three trades used in Biblical times, (v. 8-12) as the potter and the clay (v.8), the curdling of cheese, and the making of cloth. In v.13 –17, notice the three Ifs, that God was watching him if he sinned and ready to punish him. He was full of shame and drowned in his affliction even if he was innocent. God would stalk him like a lion and showed him His mighty powers. God had brought new witnesses against him, increased His anger against him. This was a different God he knew from his past experiences when God had blessed him! Job said that he wanted to die again (v. 18-22).

The book of Job has been a struggle for me to understand what Job was going through and I confess that when I read this book I feel helpless and inadequate before God.

1Corinthians 4 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Paul said that people should regard the apostles as servants of Christ entrusted with the SECRET THINGS of God. What are these secret things? According to the NIV Study Bible: These are things that human wisdom cannot discover but that are now revealed by God to his people. 1cor 4.5 “Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God.” (NASB)

It is easy to jump to conclusion about things going on in our lives and other people lives without understanding the full picture. For example we have seen in the life of Job that Job and his friends who try to comfort him did not get the full picture of why he was suffering. They did not realize that sin was not the reason that Job was suffering.

Paul then talked to the Corinthian church about the what it cost apostles to do the ministry. He was sarcastic in verse 8 that the Corinthian church was rich but in actuality they were poor. He used several paradoxes in verse 10 This is similar to the Church in Laodicea (Rev 3.18-19). In verse 11-13, Paul spoke about the conditions they faced in Ephesus, to the present when he was writing this epistle. He then said in verse 16 ‘Therefore I urge you to imitate me’. Paul was that confident in the Lord to urge them to use him as a model in their lives, to emulate him. He was sending Timothy to teach them how to live the way how Paul live. That is a very noble ambition for us to have that people would live the way we live! Let us hope, with God’s grace, that we set good examples for them.
Paul then warned those who were arrogant, believing that Paul would come to Corinth to correct the problems at the church. We need to realize that the Kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. The apostle Peter was full of talk that he would not deny Jesus three times, but he did! After Pentecost, the Holy Spirit made cowardly Peter bold and articulate leading to the conversion of three thousand and made him effective in his ministry.

Job 5.1-7 Eliphaz thought that Job was acting like a fool. In v. 8-16, Eliphaz spoke of God's goodness and Justice. In v. 17-26 he spoke about the blessedness of the man whom God disciplines. This must have been hard for Job to hear since he lost everything and his children. But the reality was that he was not under God's discipline but that he was innocent. Eliphaz gave some good theology that was not applicable to Job. Sometime friends think they are helping but in reality, it best that they give no advice!

In Job 6, Job responds to Eliphaz. Job said that he had spoken a little harshly in chapter 3 and would like some sympathy from Eliphaz. In v. 4, Job said that the arrows of the mighty were in him. This is a very common phrase used in the Old Testament, meaning that God is pointing his arrow of judgment on him (Deut 32.23; Psa 7.13; 38.2). Job had agreed with Eliphaz that the righteous would suffer when they sinned. In v. 14 he said to Eliphaz that his friends were of no comfort to him.

In Job 7, Job turns his complaints now to God. In v. 1-5, he spoke of how hard life is, in v. 6-10, he spoke of how life is fragile, and spoke about death. In verse 17-18 Job said "What is man that you make so much of him, that you give him so much attention that you examine him every morning and test him every moment." This is not what the Psalmist said in Psa 8.4. In this case, God is interested in man to scrutinize him unmercifully and nitpick at his smallest sins. God is NOT like this, Job was just complaining. When we complain we say unreasonable things about God and our fellow-human beings.

1Corinthians 3 with Commentaries, verse by verse

1Corinthians 3, Paul spoke about divisions in the church. This was caused because they were worldly (this was repeated three times in v. 1-3). Paul was the planter and Apollos the waterer, with the Corinthian church being the field, but God is the one who makes the church grows.. They were just mere men doing God's work and each will be rewarded for what they do. Because of that there should be no divisions.
In verse 10, He also told them that he had built a foundation for them to grow, and this was Jesus Christ. He warned them to be careful what building materials (works) they use on that foundation because on the Day, the works will be revealed by fire, and the fire will burn up the works that are useless. He then reminded them in verse 16, that their bodies are the temple of the living God, and that God's Holy Spirit lives in that body. He warned if any body destroys the temple, God will destroy them. He finally presented the paradox of the wisdom of the world is foolishness with God so there should be no boasting from men. Jeremiah 9.23-24

Job 3
Job mourns about the day of his birth. He wanted to die in his misery. He asked the question WHY? See the questions in Job 3:11-12 "Why did I not die at birth, Come forth from the womb and expire? 12 "Why did the knees receive me, And why the breasts, that I should suck? (NASB) 16, Job 3:16 Or why was I not hidden in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day?(NIV) Job 3:20 "Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, Job 3:23 Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?(NIV). Job was not the only one in the Bible who questioned God about the predicament he was in . Another example is Jeremiah Jer 20:14 Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me not be blessed! 15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, who made him very glad, saying, "A child is born to you-- a son!" 16 May that man be like the towns the LORD overthrew without pity. May he hear wailing in the morning, a battle cry at noon. 17 For he did not kill me in the womb, with my mother as my grave, her womb enlarged forever. 18 Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?

But he DID NOT curse God. Job, after all is a human being in his suffering and complains to God but he was true to God.

Job 4
Sometimes when your friends come to give you advice, it is not an advice but accusations. They do not see the situation you are in as fully as how God sees you. God knows what is going on. Man does not. This was the situation with Job. Eliphaz the Temanite came to Job to comfort him. Eliphaz asked him why wasn't he living the way how he tells his friends how to live. He probably hinted that he was a hypocrite. (v.1-6). He then told Job that he reap what he sowed (Job 3.8, Gal 6.7-8). Lastly he shared the mystical dream that he claimed he had. He was basing his advice on this dream to give Job. He did not based his advice on the Word of God.

1Corinthians 2
Paul told the Corinthians in verse 2 "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." Paul got straight to the point, he made Jesus Christ the only subject of his teaching and preaching with the Corinthians. It is so easy to get sidetracked on a lot of issues in evangelism and discipleship in the church. But if you stay focus on Jesus, then everything will fall in place.
The Corinthians pride themselves on having wisdom. Paul pointed out to them. that there was a wisdom for the mature. It was God's secret wisdom which comes from the Holy Spirit. Paul was not going to teach the things of men but of God. He said if the rulers had this wisdom, they would not have crucifed Jesus Christ, the Lord of Gloty. He taught about the Spirit: 10b The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. The Spirit that he talked about does not come from the world but from God. What about us? Do we rely on our own wisdom and strenght to live the Christian life. Well if we do, we are bound for failure. It is the Spirit who enables us to see the things of God and to understand what God wants to reveal to us.

Job 1-Job’s First Test
This is from God’s perspective. God met with the angels in heaven. Satan had joined them God asked Satan where did he come from. Satan said roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it. (James 4.7, 1peter 5.8-10. God said to Satan in verse 8,“Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil”Notice that God has a hedge of protection around Job, and Satan, the accuser, cannot do anything to Job (or to us) without God’s permission. God permitted Job to take away all his possessions and his children from him. This came through a series of events. Even though Job lost everything and his children, Job BLESSED God he did not curse God. “Naked I came from my mother’s womb and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.” We need to realize that all things happen in our lives are UNDER GOD’S CONTROL. From learn we should learn that anything we have, we cannot take with us.(Col 3.2-4). Where is your treasure is, there is your heart also (Matt 6.19-24). What Job was saying is YOU CANNOT TAKE ANYTHING YOU HAVE IN LIFE WITH YOU EXCEPT YOUR FAITH!! “If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this.”-C.S. Lewis

Job 2-Job’s Second Test

Job DID NOT curse God despite the fact that he lost his children, everything, and was now in pain covered with sores. Job did not sin.

1Corinthians 1 with Commentaries, verse by verse

1Corinthians
The Church in Corinth was the model church for having PROBLEMS. There were disunity, fornication, laxity in church discipline, members taking other members to court, people getting drunk at the Lord’s table and spiritual gifts. All churches have problems, it is how the churches SOLVE the problems that make them good churches. In Chapter 1, after Paul gave the introduction, he thanked God for them, it was a remarkable prayer (v. 4-9) even for this church with problems. LINK with Gleaning from Paul Pink. Paul jumped into the issue of division. He rebuked them for the assembly having divided into factions (v.10-17) of Paul, Apollos, Cephas and Christ!
He appealed for them to be united (v.10).
Paul then spoke about the cross which is a paradox. It is foolish to those who were perishing and to those who were saved it is the power of God. The foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of God and the weakness of man’ strength (v. 25). Paul used a variety of paradoxes to let the Corinthians and (us) realize that God is at work in our lives. He said at the end that we should boast of the Lord. This was essentially what Jeremiah sais in Jeremiah 9.24, “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.

1-9 Moses returned to Mount Sinai with new stone tablets to replace the ones he broke the original stone tablets in anger when he approached the camp (ex 32.19). God gave instructions and spoke again to Moses face to face saying that He was a God of Love and Judgement.

34.10-16 The Mosaic covenant (Ex 9-24) was renewed . This was a conditional covenant based on obedience. IF obedient God would drive out the inhabitants out of the land. The people were to be careful not make treaty with the inhabitants or intermarry with them. This also applies today to us, as bron-again believers, we are in this world but we are not of the world.

2Co 6:4 (NIV) Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?
16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."
17 "Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you."
18 "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
2Co 7:1 Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
Ex 34.17 Do not make cast idols
Moses brother did this very thing by making the golden calf in Ex 32.The Apostle John reminds us in 1Jo 5:21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. An idol is any object of affection that replaces our love for God. It could be a statute, person, ambition, toy, desire, etc..

Ex 34.18-28 The Feast of the Unleaven Bread, Sabbath, offering of first fruits are mentioned. God must be kept first in our lives, how we spend our money, time and entertainment. He does not want the leftovers or rejects that we habitually give him.

29-35
After forty days and night, Moses came down from Sinai, he was unaware that his face was radiant because he was with God. The people were afraid to come near Moses. The Apostle Paul mention this event as an illustration in 2 Cor 3. 13-18

2Co 3:13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away.
14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.
15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.
16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Exodus 35
The passage spoke about keeping the Sabbath to honor God (1-3). We are suppose to honor God by keeping the Sabbath day holy. As Christians we recognize Sunday, as the DAY OF REST. We should look behind the intent of the Sabbath instead of spliiting hair about whether it should be Saturday.
The Tabernacle was made not by Moses, Aaron, Bezalel and Oholiab alone. Everyone in Israel helped and contributed to the materials and helped in the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings. So it is with a church, the church is not the pastors, elders and deacons. No, the church survives because everyone builds.

James 3 with Commentaries, verse by verse
In James 3, James spoke about the danger of the tongue. Such a small organ in the body can cause as must damage to a person's emotional well-being. James likened the tongue a bit in the mouth of a horse or a small rudder in a ship. Such small things can steer such a large object. So is the tongue, it can build up or destroy. The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about the tongue.(Prov. 10.18-21). James also spoke about two kinds of wisdom in the world. The first is an earthly, unspiritual and devilish while the second type of wisdom comes from heaven and is pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, merciful, has good fruits, is impartial and sincere. This is similar to the comparison of the works of flesh and the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5.

Exodus 29 speak about the consecration of the priests (Exodus 29.1-37; Lev 8.1-36). This ritual was involved where the priests were set apart from the rest of Israel, and the Levites. They had be washed with water, put on the priestly garments, had bull and rams without defect and fine wheat flour without yeast presented to the Lord on their behalf. Wave offering were given. The bulls and rams were sacrificed, this is a very involved process. But how does it applies to us today. We have to have our sins forgiven and atoned for, we have to be pure and set apart to serve and worship God. Peter said in 1Peter 2.9, But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God that you may declare the praises of him who has called you from darkness into his wondeful light.

The Basin for Washing, also known as the Laver, (Exodus 30.17-21) was made of bronze. Aaron and his sons were to wash their hands and feet with water before entering the tabernacle so that they won't die. Jesus is our Laver, He takes away our sins with His blood.
Anointing oil, Exodus 30.22-30, was used to anoint the tabernacle and everyting thar was in it. Incense was also made Anointing oil and incense link

James 1 with Commentaries, verse by verse

James is a very practical book in the Bible. James 1 is divided up into trials and temptations (1.2-16) and being doers (19-26) James said that when trials come our way we should accept them joyfully, because we get perseverance, and that builds maturity. You want wisdom, ask God for it faith. and he will give it to you. Wisdom is covered a lot in the book of Proverbs, see Prov 1-4, 8-9 and throughout Proverbs.
Trials are good for us, because, when you stand up to it you get the crown of life. He reminded us that every good gift comes from God (v. 17). The second division in v.19-27 says essentially that we should listen to the word and DO it. How many sermons have we been through and we felt inspired but yet did not follow through on what we heard. He said in verse 27"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." there is not mention of the spiritual disciplines such as reading the Bible, praying or Christian fellowship. James hit the nail on the head! I have heard our African-American christian brothers say "You can talk the talk but if you can't walk the walk what good is your religion?

Blended Reading Plan from Back to the Bible

Exodus 23 (v.1-9) had application with the 9th commandment, giving false testimony against your neighbor. This is very important especially when bringing judgment against the accused. We see this today in the court system such fancy words as perjury, false testimony. All of this has to do with fairness to the accused. The passage spells out examples from where you see your enemy's ox or donkey wandering off and returning it to him to not denying justice to the poor not accepting bribes, not oppressing the aliens. How much more practical can this be to us today? Are we just and show mercy to the people around us, those who are poor and helpless, to the immigrants in our society!

Exodus 23.10-13 deals with the Sabbatical Year, where on the seventh year the land remained unplowed and unused. The poor could get food from it and the wild animals eat what is left on the cultivated land. (See Leviticus 25.1-7)
The people were to work for six days and on the seventh day, they are to rest. We don't have to be legalistic about honoring God on Sunday. But we should go to church and worship God and have fellowship with one another, and have a time to rest.

Three Annual Feasts were mentioned. They were the Feast of the Unleavened Bread (v. 15) the Feast of the Harvest v. 16 and the Feast of the Ingathering. (v.16). Link to Annual Feast Days
God's Angel was to go ahead of the Israelites, to guard them on their way to make sure that they have arrived safely in Canaan. They were told not to worship the idols on Canaan but to destroy them. God will send His terror ahead of them and throw them in confusion. Rahab said that The people of Jericho knew about the works of God among the Israelites and they were terrified (Joshua 2.9-11). Remember as Christians, we do not compromise with the world in our thoughts, words or deeds.

In Exodus 24, the Covenant is confirmed to the people. Moses went up Mount Sinai and stayed there for forty days and nights with God.

2Thessalonians 2 with Commentaries, verse by verse

This chapter deals with the antichrist (v.1 -12). He was the man of lawlessness. Paul warned the Thessalonians not to be alarmed or unsettled by things happening around them. The antichrist is being held back by the Spirit until the time is rightr for him to come. More information on the antichrist is found in this link.

Paul warned the Thessalonians to stand firm and hold on to the teachings that they heard from Paul. Paul, again prayed for them in 2Thess 2.16-17 Gleanings from Paul on 2Th 2.16-17.
The Greek word translated "stand firm" is "steko." William Barclay says this is the "word used for a soldier standing fast in the shock of battle, with the enemy surging down upon him." The Scriptures tell us that we stand in the faith (1 Cor. 16:13), in grace (Rom. 5:1-2; 1 Pet 5:5-12), and in Christ (2 Cor. 1:21). It is God who enables us to stand firm by anointing us with His Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 1:21; Rom. 14:4).

What about us, are we easily sway by what people say about God, Jesus Christ, the Bible and the last days. We need to be firmly rooted in the word.

The offering for the Tabernacle is discussed Exodus 25.1-9; 35.4-9 Here, in the passage the offerings the Lord wanted for the tabernacle were listed. These includee gold, silver and bronze, and blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen; goat hair; ram skins dyed red and hides of sea cow, spices and other gems. These materials would be used to build the tabernacle.

The Ark was then described (Exodus 25.10-20; 37.1-9). The Ark is mentioned first because this represented the Throne of God.

Table of Showbread was to have the Bread of the Presence place on it before God at all times. Jesus said that He is the Bread of Life John 6:48-69

The Lampstand or Menorah are mentioned in Exodus 25.31-39; 37.17-24 The Lampstand represents Jesus as the Light of the Word (John 8.12.

Exodus 26.1-37 deals with the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle is also discussed in Exodus 36.8-38, The NIV sometimes call it the Tent of the Meeting. Please be aware that the physical layout of the tabernacle is a variation found in Solomon's Temple, Zerubbabel Temple. Herod's Temple and Ezekiel Temple.

The tabernacle Exodus 26.1-37; 36.8-38 had two sections, thew courtyard and the Holy Place. The courtyard was was 150 feet long (100 cubits) by 75 feet wide. The Holy Place was 30 feet (20 cubits)by 15 feet(10 cubits). The Holy Place had the golden table for the bread of the Presence, the golden lampstand and the altar of incense. There was a veil that separate the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies. The Holy of the Holies (Most Holy Place) was 15 feet square (10 cubit square) The Holy of Holies kept the Ark
So far we see symbolism of Christ repesented in the furniture of the tabernacle as King in the Ark, Bread of Life in the Table of the Shewbread and Light of the World in the Menorah. Is Jesus the Lord of your life, does he give you sustainence in your life and is He the light that leads you in life.

2Thessalonians 3 with Commentaries, verse by verse

2Thessalonians 3 Paul asked for prayers that the Gospel would be spread rapidly would be well-received, and he would be protected from evil men. He also prayed in v. 3-5 that God would protect and strenghten the Thessalonians form the evil one because He is faithful. Paul also warned the Thessalonians to keep away from any brother who is idle and not living according to his teaching. He gave a benediction where God is the Lord of peace, who gives us peace at all times. What have learnt from this passage: we should pray that the Gospel is spread rapidly and received, keep away from brothers who are idle, and the Lord of peace will be with us.

2Thessalonians 1 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Paul was a man of prayer (v. 11-12) who gave thanks (v. 3-4). He reminded then when Christ returns (revealed from heaven), it wil be good new or bad news. It will be good news for those who had suffered, he will avenge his people, He will pay back trouble to those who have trouble them. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel It is not enough to be a law-abodng citizen and to be consider good. If you don't know God yoy will be judged.
It will be good news for those who know Him as their Lord and Savior, because he will be glorified in His people *v. 19 and He will be marveled and worship by those who believe. Please do not take this lightly. Every time you hear the Gospel and turn your back, your heart get harder and harder. He is reaching out to you to come to Him.

Blended Reading Plan from Back to the Bible

Exodus 19-20; 1 Thessalonians 5

Exodus 19 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Exodus 19 showed the preparation the people made when God would come down in a dense cloud from Mount Sinai. The people had to wash their clothes. Moses had to consecrate the people for two days, they had to abstain from sexual relations and on the third day God would appear to them. There was a boundary set so that no one would cross the boundary or they would be killed. Why all these restrictions? Because God is a holy God and when you come to God you have to meet Him on His terms.

Exodus 20
In verse 1-17, God spoke the words for Moses which are the Ten Commandments. What was the purpose of the Ten Commandments? It was to love God (commandments 1-4) and to love our neighbor as ourselves (commandments 5-10). If we love God and our neighbor we would not be breaking any of the commandments. Another purpose of the Ten Commandments were it was a foundation for civil and religious laws for Israel. Third reason the ten commandment would prevent chaos and anarchy in the society.
Jesus went one step further with the Ten Commandments. He gave the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7) in which the intent of the heart is judged even if no action is taken or any laws broken. For example, if a man is angry with his brother, he commits murder. If a man looks at a woman with lust and have not even touched the woman, he has commited adultery. We would be all guilty then even we did not commit any crimes or done the actual physical act such as murder or adultery. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount was much more difficult to keep than the Sermon on the Mount.
In verses 18-21, the people were afraid of God. in verse 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."
Finally he spoke about idols. This goes back to the first commandment, you shall have no other gods before me because I am the Lord your God.
What about us? Let us go through a period of self-examination. Do we love the Lord with all our soul, mind, heart and strength? Do we love our neigbor as ourself? Are there any idols in our lives? May God reveal the sins in our lives and that we would not only repent, seek reconciliation and restitution.

1Thessalonians 5 with Commentaries, verse by verse
Paul wanted the Thesalonian Christians to know that Jesus was coming again. He would come as a thief in the night. Despite all these prophets we have to day that Jesus is coming befoe, during and after the Tribulation, no one really knows when He will come back, although we have all thes wondeful prophecy charts and timetables. Jesus will come back on time, in his own time. This is why we should wait expectantly and faithfully. If you knew that a thief was going to rob you in the middle of the night, you would be up, waiting for him! In the same way we should wait like the five wise virgins in Matthew 25.

Paul metioned parts of the armor of God, which included faith and love as our breastplate, and the hope of salvation as our helmets.

We should live a holy life because the next thing Paul talked about was the coming of the Lord (1Thes 4.13-18). We would not be ashamed when he comes back if we live a holy life. He describe how Jesus will returned, so that we should encourage each other. The world is full of bad news but the good news is Jesus is coming again and that we should rejoice in that.

He left some final instructions, amomg which are verses which are easy for us to memorize, v 16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually

Exodus 16 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Exodus 17 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Exodus 16 and 17 showed how God provided for these some two million people. I am sure within a few days of leaving Egypt, they ran out of food and water. God had already had something planned. He provided them with manna and quail. The people were suppose to collect enough manna for each day and collect twice as much for that day and the Sabbath. The verbs grumble, complain and forgot appeared frequently in the books of Exodus and Numbers. They had forgotten how God had delivered them across the Red Sea within a few days! Now, they were hungry. They were told to collect as much as they need. Now needing is different from wanting! When they started to collect manna, some hoarded, and the manna turned into worms. The manna symbolizes to us as Christians, the word of God, it is sweet as honey (Psa 19.10). We are to read His word everyday, some day we read three and get some inspiration, other day we read a couple verses and that keep us for the rest of the day. It is like manna, exo 16.17-18.
God had also provided water for them in Exodus 17. The community were wandering in the wilderness, going from place to place and could not find water and they grumbled to Moses. God told him to go ahead of the people and he struck the rock at Meribah with the rod he used to strike the Nile. He did so and they had water to drink. He called this place Meribah which meant quarelling and Massah which meant testing.

In Exo 17.8-15, the Amakelites were defeated by God. All Moses had to do was to hold his hands high, and Joshua and the Israelite army would defeat them. When his hands were tired, Moses hands were lowered, the Amakelites is defeated. Aaron and Hur stood on each side of Moses ans supported each hands. This is like prayer in the battle of life. It is so easy to be tired when you go it alone but when you have people supporting you, you get victorious in God's strength.

In Exodus 18 Moses was on the verge of burning out physically and emotionally. He had to listen to all the cases and complaints brought before him. His father-in-law Jethro advise him to delegate some of the work. Sometimes in the ministry, we think we can go it alone, and we don't seem to see anyone who could help you. But this is where you get to know your people. Remember pick godly people and delegate.

1Thessalonians 4 with Commentaries, verse by verse
Paul wanted the Thesalonian Christians to live to please God (1Thes 4.1-12). The verse that spoke to me today was "It is God's will that you should be santified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should have control over his body." To santify means to be set apart. For example in your house you may have two set of silverware and chinaware. The ordinary everyday utensils and chinaware are used for everyday use. But when you have company you bring out the best chinaware and silverware. You see these are santified for a special purpose. We are like that we are set apart for a holy God and we should live a holy life.
We should live a holy life because the next thing Paul talked about was the coming of the Lord (1Thes 4.13-18). We would not be ashamed when he comes back if we live a holy life. Exodus 14 is the key chapter. It is such a beautiful illustration of our salvation in Jesus Christ. The Israelites was leaving bondage, crossing the Red Sea into the the land of Freedom away from the clutches of Pharaoh. They had to walk through the path that God had provided them. They had to go forward and never look back. In of the greatest promise in Scripture is Exodus 14.13. They were not be afraid, stand firm, and be still. How could slaves take on one of the mightiest armies of the world at that time? It was God's battle, not theirs. That applies to us today, we not be afraid, stand firm, and be still. (Psa 46.10)

Exodus 15 with Commentaries, verse by verse
Exodus 15 is the song of Moses and Miriam. We tend to forget that God is also a God of Judgement. We are so wrapped up with the God of love that we are cannot imagine God being a God of Righteousness. Even in the New Testament, Jesus wept for Jerusalem in Matthew 23 when he had pronounced the seven woes on the Pharisees. He had predicted the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Do not forget some of the horrible things has not yet happened to mankind. See the book of Revelation. The first time, Jesus came, he came as a Lamb to die for our sins, the second time when he comes, He will be a Lion, he will come back as King and Judge. We tend to forget that God is a warrior destroying his enemies. (Exo 15). In the time being our role as Christians is to take as many with as to heaven.
